With the exception of a small proportion of cases, Down syndrome is not inherited from the mother or the father of the baby. The genetic event which causes Down syndrome arises spontaneously in the egg or the sperm. The main factor which increases your risk of having a baby with Down syndrome is maternal age.
Because the genetic event causing Down syndrome arises in the sperm or egg, SureMart cannot diagnose Down syndrome, or any other trisomies such as Edward syndrome, Patau syndrome, Klinefelter syndrome etc.
